Buying floor cleaners can sometimes be expensive, and can often have negative affects on the environment. Making your own cleaners is a great alternative that makes both your pocketbook and the environment happy. At Floor Coverings International in Western North Carolina, we’ve made a list of our favorite easy floor cleaning recipes so you can start mixing your own cleaning solutions today!


All-Purpose Floor Cleaner

Ingredients: Equal parts hot water and white vinegar.

Uses: This works on most types of flooring including laminate, wood, tile and linoleum. If using on wood, be sure to wring out the mop thoroughly. Excessive moisture can be bad for hardwood floors.

Instructions: Mop floor with your water and vinegar mixture. Rinse with plain water. Dry if necessary.

Wood Floor Cleaner

Ingredients: 1 gallon of hot water, 3/4 cup of olive oil and 1/2 cup lemon juice

Uses: This is a great option for getting wood floors to really shine. Use it on any type of wood floor.

Instructions: Mix ingredients together in a bucket. Soak a mop and then wring it out well. Mop floor, making sure not to get the floor too wet. Be careful to let it dry all the way before walking over the floor in case of slipperiness.

Carpet Cleaner

Ingredients: Equal parts hot water and white vinegar. Add a couple drops of dishwashing liquid for stubborn stains.

Uses: Any carpet stain. This will work better if the spill has occurred recently, but can help to minimize older stains too.

Instructions: Mix ingredients together and place in a spray bottle. Spray onto stain and let sit for about five minutes. Scrub with a soft brush to remove stain.
