At Floor Coverings International Western NC, we love bringing you creative insight and perspectives from bloggers who are kind enough to share their wisdom and how they got started. Today we have an interview with Christy, successful blogger at 11 Magnolia Lane.
1. Please tell us a little about yourself.
Amy and I met in college at James Madison University a few years ago (we won’t tell how many!). We were roommates our freshman year when the computer matched us up, and we’ve been fast friends ever since. Fortunately, our husbands and children—and even our dogs — get along, too!
2. Why did you decide to start a blog? What do you enjoy about blogging?
Amy came up with the idea of starting a blog as a way to promote a graphic design business she owned at the time. She invited me and another friend, Terry, to join her so that we could all blog together. Terry has since moved on to give all of her time to her successful event planning business, but Amy and I are still going strong, five years later. Blogging is the perfect way to do what we love while earning an income. We both have online shops and assist local design/decorating clients, as well.
3. How would you describe your home design and décor style?
Even though there are two of us, our style is nearly identical! I would say we’re a combination of styles—aren’t most homes that way? A little traditional, farmhouse, eclectic, glam, and industrial all shaken up together. We both tend to gravitate towards neutrals for our walls and larger furniture pieces, and then we add color with artwork, fabrics, and accessories. That lets us change things easily and relatively inexpensively to work with different seasons and trends.
Everywhere! Pinterest and other blogs are always fun sources of new ideas, but since we both love old things, we’re just as likely to find something “new” to love at an auction, flea market, or thrift store. Everyone who loves decorating knows that sometimes you buy one new thing and you wind up changing the entire room around!
5. Tell us about a recent project you’re proud of.
We both completed some really big projects this year, so it’s hard to choose. I know that Amy is most proud of making over her kitchen. It was a HUGE job—new backsplash, tons of cabinets that she painted, open shelving, and built-in bookshelves that transformed her breakfast area. It’s so bright and beautiful now!
My family moved (again) at the end of June. My husband is a career Army officer and this was our fifth move in the last seven years, so mostly I’m just thankful that we survived another relocation and found a beautiful and welcoming home to live in at this assignment. Not to toot my own horn, but we’ve been here for six months now and I’m always impressed that I can unpack so much stuff and make things look and feel like home in such a short period of time. I’ve also found time to paint five rooms and create a custom mudroom and pantry—and I love how they turned out!
6. Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I guess both of us love to stress that beautiful design and decor don’t have to be expensive, and spray paint is your friend!
